Super-Kamiokande Onsite Phone Numbers (revised)

Instructions for using the SuperK site phone system
(Edited from message from K. Inoue by RJW, 3/18/97; updated 2/1/2007 by HGB

See also the phone list on the official SK website.

NOTE, Feb. 1, 2007!   The phone numbers in the Kamioka area will be changed effective February 1, 2007, 2:00 am. The old local phone numbers (after the 0578 area code) will be changed from 5 digits to 6 digits by adding an "8" to the old numbers. I.e. old: 0578-5-xxxx to new: 0578-85-xxxx.
The list below is already updated with the added digit for each Kamioka number.

Dial-in from outside

If you call from outside Japan: The country code for Japan is 81.

From the US, if you have a common long distance carrier (AT&T, MCI, Sprint, etc.), dial 011-81 to reach phone numbers in Japan, followed by the area code (without leading 0) and phone number. Phone numbers below starting with 0578-xx-xxxx (Mozumi), 076-yyy-yyyy (Toyama, Osawano), or 090-zzzz-zzzz (cell phones) can be reached from the US by dialing 011-81-578-xx-xxxx, 011-81-76-yyy-yyyy, or 011-81-90-zzzz-zzzz, respectively.
E.g. if you want to call the US Group office in the Kenkyu-tou, dial 011-81-578-85-9632.

Most of the numbers below can be dialed directly from outside. Those numbers starting with a "------" can only be reached via one of the 3 switchboards.

dial-in via switchboard at Kenkyu-tou

We now have 3 phone numbers for incoming calls. You can use them to call any telephone, at the experiment site, office, or dormitory.
  1. 0578-85-2116 (maximum 1 connection, touch-tone phones only)
This is the old phone number. It now works only for callers using touch-tone phones. You will hear a Japanese announcement. After that you enter the internal extension number. For example, "85-2116 (announcement) 110" will call the computer room.
  2. 0578-85-9645 (maximum 4 connections, tone and pulse dialing allowed)
Use to call internal number from any type of phone. You will hear japanese message that prompts you to push 0. By checking the 0, system knows which kind of phone you used. If you use tone phone, the system will ask you to enter the extension number. If you use dial phone, the system requires interactive dialing for improving recognition probability {details needed, to be inserted}. For example from push phone, "85-9645 (guidance) 0 (guidance) 110".
  3. 0578-85-9659 (maximum 23 connections, tone only)
No guidance, no announcement. Push "85-9659-(dial tone)-(internal number)".

Broadcasting (paging) in the observatory

... also known as "God phone" ... ;-)

You can broadcast from any phone in the office, mine and dormitory. {This sounds dangerous! -RJW}

41broadcasts in the office building. 42will terminate that broadcast.
43broadcasts in the mine. 44will terminate that broadcast.
47broadcasts in the dormitory. 48will terminate that broadcast.

Phones in the dormitory

For dormitory users, you can use internal numbers also in the dormitory. 1?? is a phone in the office, 2?? is a phone in the mine, 3?? is a handy phone, 4? is a broadcast and 6+(room number) is a phone in the dormitory.

A convenient feature in the dormitory is wake-up call service.

  1. First, call 71 to set the time you want to wake up. You will hear a sound like "tsu, tsu, tsu". Then enter the time in 24-hour form (for example 2330 for 11:30 pm). You will hear a confirmation in Japanese and after that in English.
  2. If you want to verify the set time, enter 72. You will hear the set time.
  3. To turn off the service, dial 73. You will hear a confirmation.
  4. The system will call you 5 minutes before the set time. It will ring 10 times, wait for a while, ring 10 times, wait for a while .... That call will be repeated 5 times, then the service will be closed. When you pick up the phone, you will hear a message that the call is a wakeup call.

In order to use the wakeup call service or to make outside calls from your dorm room (prefix 0), you must check into the system. That can be done at the reception room by a manager.

Routing service

If you use multi-function phone or wireless phone, routing service is available. You can transfer a call to another phone when you are absent. If wireless, push 71-(internal number where you want to transfer). After 10 rings, a call will be transfered to the specified phone. 72 will turn off that service. If multi-function phone, you will see 16 buttons with LED labeled from 1 to 16. Push button No.13, and then the internal number of the destination. LED will be turned on. Without any rings, a call will be transfered to the specified phone. By pushing No.13 button again, the service is turned off together with the LED.
